Ports of Call Restaurant and Lounge

Many people hesitate to order a whole bottle of a wine they haven’t tried before because they may not enjoy it. Even if it’s wonderful, why limit yourself to only one wine when you could sample several? Those are some of the reasons why the Ports of Call Restaurant and Lounge is proud to offer Wines by the Glass. The area’s first all “By the Glass” extensive wine list is accompanied by our signature specialty drink list and our custom dinner beverage menu. We proudly serve the “Pride of Annapolis” Fordham Brewing Company’s hometown beer on tap as well as in the bottle.

Wine Tasting Tips

Color

Start by holding your glass by the stem and observe the color and texture (weight) of the wine. Hold it up to the light to get a better glimpse.

Smell

In order to release more of the flavor and aroma, swirl the wine around in your glass. Don’t be shy – put your nose right over the rim of the glass to breathe in the aroma. Try to detect any significant fragrances within the wine.

Body

Take note of the streaks (or legs) that the wine produces along the curves of the glass. This will help you determine the body of the wine.

Taste

Here comes the best part – Slowly and purposefully taste the wine making certain it reaches each part of your tongue. The tip, sides, center, and back of your tongue each can produce a different taste sensation - so in order to get the full picture, glide the wine along to each part of your tongue to ensure the whole masterpiece of flavor is experienced.
